Green Cross Pharmacy opens.
1964
Operated by Italian immigrant brothers Peppi “Joe” and Fernando “Freddy” Giangregorio, it is located at 393 Hanover Street. The brothers graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and bought the business from Anthony Amadeo, which had operated as a corner store/pharmacy for over a century. Open 16 hours a day, the pharmacy extends credit to neighborhood residents, obtains special-order goods from Italy, and hosts the last soda fountain in the North End. It closes on March 5, 2019.
